Mag Lev

Shanghai has a high speed train you see called the Mag Lev. Which I believe stands for Magnetic Leivtation. This is the first train of its kind in the world. Designed in Germany and made with German parts (thankfully!) this train rocks and nearly flies it goes so fast!

The train has a maximum speed in normal operation of 431 km/h (268 mph)! While it is cruising along the outside just flashes by in an instant! If you ever get to Shanghai this is a great 7 minute tourist excursion! All in all the pictures here and the speed to go with it are not what you think of when you think of transportation in China. I think bicycles, slow rickety trains, buses, etc...

Split Pants anyone?

I'm betting that most of you have never heard of something that the foreigners here in China call "Split Pants." Well take a look at the photo below to get a good idea and then I will explain it to you...

You see since diapers are expensive for kids historically they were not available for everyone to afford. So as of a few months old the kids are given pants with a big slit or hole in the butt in order to make life easy. No diapers to change. In fact it is a common sight to see parents holding their kid up while the kid goes to the bathroom on the grass, cement or really anywhere. I've yet to take a photo of that but if I do I will pass along. So for those of you with young kids put in your orders now for split pants and I will be sure to bring some back on my visit!

Earthquake (part 2)

Dear Family and Friends,

A good many of you have asked about the earthquake of last week here in China. I thought I would take a moment to tell you all a bit more as today marks one week since the quake hit. My office and apartment are approximately 1,500 miles from the epicenter, yet the quake was felt significantly here. I’ve heard reports of it being felt all over Asia in fact.

As I said today marks one week since the quake hit. China has announced a three day period of mourning. This is the first ever national mourning period in the history of China! At 2:28 PM today China came to an utter and complete halt. We were to have 3 minutes of silence to mourn the catastrophe. What was interesting was while the people stood, hands behind them or bowing in thought the cars all literally laid on their horns. Others turned on air horns, all in all it was a near deafening! It was very powerful to watch and yet so different from the moments of silence I’ve been a part of in the US where you could literally hear a pin drop.

Upon getting home from work today I turned on the TV to have dinner and simply relax. Take a look at the attached photo and you will see what shows up on my TV. In this state of mourning China has put a stop to all entertainment – including TV, the torch relay, sporting events, etc.

While I do find it slightly amusing that they have blocked my TV for 3 days, the entire situation is certainly tragic. The death toll is officially above 34,000 and counting. The latest figures I have heard put the damage at over $25 billion! I highly urge each and every one of you to join me and consider any sort of financial support you can to the relief efforts. There are many ways to donate but to make it easier I’ve put a link to the American Red Cross page for the China earthquake relief.

http://american.redcross.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ntld_china_relief_fund_0508&s_subsrc=RCOProfile_China&s_src=HomeLatestNews

I know that with the economy so tough right now that money might be tough and I understand that, so if you don’t feel comfortable donating now please keep the victims and survivors in your thoughts. I hope all of you are doing well!

Earthquake!

I've heard from many of you asking if I was affected in the earthquake here in China. Thankfully all is well with me and my team. The quake was about 1,500 miles from my office. Yet it was felt rather dramatically in our office! I was out at a factory at the time and in a car so in all honesty I didn't feel anything. However upon my return to the office they were all talking about it. They had felt the quake so much that they contemplated running down 16 flights of stairs just to be on the ground!

From the reports we are seeing here the earthquake lasted for between 3-5 minutes and was felt as far away as Vietnam and Indonesia!

In any event I'm doing just fine and wanted to thank you all for asking.

Happy Mother's Day MOM!

I just wanted to wish my mom (and all mom's out there) a very happy mothers day from a long ways away!

I found this quote in the China Daily the other day and thought I would pass along:
"There was never a great man who had not a great mother - it is hardly an exaggeration."

Well I might not be a great man in all of your minds but I do owe my mom tremendous thanks everyday, not just Mother's Day!

Early Morning in the Park

They always say the "early bird gets the worm" right? Well I made a early visit to a park near my house this weekend. I often run here and love the scenery so I figured it best to return with my camera.

This is a common scene around parks in China. I think he is writing a poem or something to that effect. It is done in water so it disappears over a few minutes allowing him to start over or to write something new. It's amazing the control he has with the brush to get all the strokes proper.

This is another fairly regular scene in China. Early morning Tai Chi or group dance lessons. You will often find 50-100 people taking part in the class.

This park amazes me on so many levels. It is right in the middle of a major industrial city and you wouldn't know if you didn't see the occasional building over the top of the trees...

Old Meets New

China as a country is developing so rapidly that it is difficult for some, including me, to comprehend.

Check out this photo taken from just down the street from my apartment. It truly shows the idea of "old" meeting "new" with the old fashioned way of carrying items to and from crossing the street in front of a brand new Mercedes!

Big Load

So you think you pack your car, minivan, van, truck to the extreme sometimes? I guarantee you have nothing on this guy in Southern China!! Every day you see something like this, sometimes on a vehicle like this and sometimes on a bike even!
